Video File Storage
August 19, 2007 by Bruce Walls
Video files need a lot of space, digital video typically uses 3.6MB of space per second which equates to 1GB for a 5 minute video. You will also need working space on your hard disk. It is generally accepted that you multiply the size of the video by four when allowing for working space.
For instance, if you want to capture 10 minutes of video then you need at least 8GB of free disk space on your hard disk to complete the video. This might sound a little like overkill but your operating system and your [tag-tec]video editing suite[/tag-tec], has to use that space while working in the back ground.
As lots of desktop computers and more especially laptops might only have around 80GB or hard disk for all purposes then it is probably obvious that you will need more disk space. The answer is, in my opinion, to buy an external hard drive which can be used with either your desktop or laptop.
I have one 500GB LaCie external hard drive and soon to buy another. It is an excellent hard drive and easy on the eye as well. Once I have the second one then I will be able to stack it on the first with a 1000GB of storage leaving my computer hard drive free for the editing suite, operating system and much more.
