Jing Project: Screen Capture
October 14, 2007 by Bruce Walls
The Jing Project is a journey to discover how everyday conversations can be improved. Think of all those IM chats, emails, blog posts and comments you’ve made over the years. Now imagine a more visual world where integrating screen captures and screencasts into those chats, email, etc took nothing more than a matter of seconds. Can you imagine it, because it is already here it’s Jing.
Jing, from TechSmith of Camtasia Studio fame, is a fun application to play with. Think of Jing as a supplement to all your chat discussions, email threads, forum posts and blog entries. It sits nicely on your desktop, ready to capture and share your images and video at a moment’s notice. Simply select an area of your screen, capture it as an image or record it as a [tag-tec]screen capture video[/tag-tec], and then click ’share’. Jing conveniently places a URL to your content on your clipboard ready for you to paste the URL into any of your conversations here’s an over-view of the features and how the thing works and what to do.
For a walk through take a look at this video and remember it is a free program.
Once installed and opened Jing places a little rotating control panel on the top edge of your desk top with the following controls. Capture (video or image),History and More (settings and control).
Jing files are hosted on Screencast. To use Jing, you’ll need to sign up for a Screencast account. This will provide you with 200 MB of storage and 1GB per month of bandwidth. The normal trial account for Screencast.com has a 60 day limit, but to get the most out of the Jing Project, and to share our appreciation for your feedback, Screencast are offering this account with no expiration until the end of the Jing Project.
Your History is where all your captures are sent after you Share or Save. Here you can re-Share, Save, or Delete your previous captures. Deleting a capture deletes it from your History as well as Screencast.com if it has been shared. This breaks any links to this media that you may have shared.
Good news for Mac user as well. The Jing Project is available for Mac user, although other TechSmith products only run on Windows.
Here is a short video clip that I made in two minutes and it’s all for free!
