Lightening Strikes

April 27, 2008 by Bruce Walls

lightening.jpgI was sitting at my computer desk on Tuesday reading about making videos from your articles to submit to video sharing sites. Outside it was raining with thunder and lightening when suddenly BANG, we were hit by the lightening.

Instantly the TV stopped, as did the computer. My wife was scared and the dog didn’t like it either as he was sitting outside on the balcony so we had to bring him in for company,

Now I don’t know whether we were actually hit or just close enough to the electrical charge to be affected. When the rain stopped I looked at the TV sattelite dish to see that it was not pointing where it should have been and it was now inoperable. So no more TV that night.

I was surprised that the computer started but there was no internet connection. Not all the lights were flashing on the modem and router so I left it for the night and checked in the morning.

Same problem next morning so I soon realized that one or both of the components were damaged. Eventually I had to replace both units which meant a visit to the ISP and then another visit to a local small computer store.

I brought them home, configured them both and nothing happened, at least with the router. I messed around for the rest of the day but still could not get the router to work which networks to the TV satellite decoder and wireless laptops.

The next day brought an eight hour power cut, I like in Thailand and you have to expect and live with these things. So nothing was achieved that day. Eventually I found a computer technician who was capable of configuring the two units and got me back to normal.

All in all we were without a fully working network for ninety hours and I spent most of the waking hours trying to configure the units, by changing leads, using other computers and reworking the settings, a real waste of time and effort.
