Sony DCR-HC96 Camcorder

The [tag-tec]Sony DCR-HC96[/tag-tec] ($650 as of May 22, 2007), Sony’s high end MiniDV camcorder, offers step up features like a higher capacity battery, a charging dock, and the ability to capture higher-resolution video than other HC series models can. Though it scored well in still image performance, where it takes 3 megapixel still shots, its low light video quality and battery life were merely average.
The 2.7-inch wide-screen LCD has touch-screen controls; and play, record, and stop buttons sit just below the screen, enabling you to keep your eye on the action while controlling the camera. A built-in lens cap and a top-loading cassette mechanism are other subtle design pluses. The DCR-HC96 includes Sony’s proprietary AIS accessory shoe for attaching an AIS-compatible microphone or flash.

The ability to use an external microphone is a plus point but it can only sit in the accessory shoe which restricts its use. However if you are using it for talking head video clips for your website, then it will be an improvement over the onboard microphone.
The Sony DCR-HC96 delivered impressive still images of 3-megapixel and scores high marks for color accuracy, sharpness, and exposure. The video quality was impressive, too. High marks for audio clarity and for video taken in standard light, along with middling scores for low light video, yielded an overall video quality score of very good.
When fully charged, the DCR-HC96 permitted about 85 minutes of video recording before shutting down. That’s about average for the MiniDV camcorders but dissappointing for a camcorder in this price range.
Although the camera performed well there are better camcorders available at cheaper prices and certainly much cheaper camcorders available for producing [tag-ice]website video[/tag-ice] clips for your use on your site.
