sanyo-vpc-cg10Sanyo unveiled two new 720P high definition camcorders this week, the upright, “pistol-grip” VPC-CG10 and the VPC-TH1, a traditionally-shaped horizontal design. Each offers different strengths: the TH1 tries to make a name for itself with its diminutive size, and offers a larger 30x optical zoom but smaller 2-megapixel CMOS sensor. The CG10 is positioned as a camera/camcorder hybrid, with has a smaller 5x optical zoom but a much larger 10-megapixel CMOS and high-res photos. Both find themselves in a market flooded with new models fighting for attention.

The VPC-CG10 replaces last year’s VPC-CG9, with several upgrades. Firstly and most important, the CG9 only shot in standard definition camcorder. The CG10 records 1280 x 720P video at 30fps, as well as options for standard definition. The CMOS sensor has increased in size from 9-megapixels to 10.66, with a corresponding increase in native still resolution sizes. The LCD has increased from 2.5 inches to 3.0 inches, and the CG10 features a new noise reduction system.

The VPC-CG10 retains the same upright form factor as the CG9, slightly narrower and less deep, but a little taller. Five colors will be available: black, white, pink, blue, and green.

The VPC-TH1 is a different take: a highly compact camcorder in a horizontal form factor new to Sanyo. Smaller than both the JVC GZ-MS100 and the Samsung SC-MX10, the VPC-TH1 is high definition camcorder. Like the CG10, it records in 1280 x 720P video at 30fps and options for standard definition. The CMOS sensor is only 1.1 megapixels, much smaller than the CG10′s, which only allows for 1.1-megapixel native stills and 2-megapixel interpolated stills. The TH1, however, takes advantage of its longer size, offering a 30x optical zoom and is fitted for a new long life battery, which Sanyo targets for 180 minutes of record time.

Both the Sanyo VPC-TH1, available in silver, red, and blue, and VPC-CG10, in black, white, pink, blue, and green, are intended to ship in February 2009.
